Registering an imported vehicle

Register a car brought in from another country onto Spanish plates.

What we do

  • We check your paperwork before filing anything, and tell you what is missing.
  • We work out the registration tax (IEDMT) and file it.
  • We submit the case to the traffic authority and follow its progress.
  • We give you the plate number as soon as it is assigned.

What is NOT included

  • The ITV test, which you must pass yourself before we start
  • The physical number plates, which are made separately

Can you start yet?

These have to exist before this trámite can begin. They are not papers to find — they are steps that happen first.

  1. Reduced technical sheet

It is the document that puts the car’s technical specification into the Spanish format. A qualified engineer issues it, and without it the ITV cannot inspect the vehicle.

We can do this oneReduced technical sheet
  2. Spanish ITV passed

The technical inspection at a Spanish station. The car has to physically be there, so it is the one step we cannot do for you.

Only you can do this one

What it costs

€149.00

Our fee · VAT included

+ €99.77 in official duties

DGT registration fee. The IEDMT tax is separate and depends on the vehicle.

Total to pay: €248.77

The duties are not ours: they are paid to the administration and they are the same whoever files the paperwork.

Which documents you need

Not yet confirmed with the gestoría. This is what the procedure usually asks for, and it has not been checked with the people who file it. Treat it as a guide, not a definitive list.

  • ID of the owner

Both sides, legible and without glare.

  • Foreign registration document

The original document from the country where it was registered.

  • Foreign technical sheet

Or the COC (certificate of conformity) if you have one.

  • Purchase invoice or contract

With the price and the date — this is what the tax office looks at.

  • Import ITV certificate

You take the car through the ITV yourself first; only the certificate is needed here.

Depending on your case

  • Deregistration abroad

If the country of origin issues one.

How long it takes: Usually 3–6 weeks, though it depends on the tax office and the DGT.

We do not handle this yet

We are finalising the agreement with the gestoría. What is on this page is accurate and useful for getting your papers ready. You can register your case now: nothing is charged and we ask for no documents until the procedure is open.

You get a reference and a page where you can see where it stands. We are not asking you for any document yet: this case is not open and the list is not confirmed with the gestoría that files it. When it is, we write to you with the definitive list and you upload everything in one go.

Before any paperwork it is worth knowing what the registry says about the vehicle: mileage, commercial use and charges.
